The Importance of Legacy Giving in Islam

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

"If the son of Adam passes away, his deeds stop except for three: useful knowledge, Sadaqah Jariyah, and a righteous child who prays for them."

The Sunnah also emphasizes the importance of preparing a will. In authentic narrations found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, the Prophet ﷺ said: "It is not permissible for any Muslim who has something to bequeath to stay for two nights without having their Last Will and Testament written and kept ready."

The Qur'an likewise encourages believers to make a will and provide for charitable causes:

"It has been ordained upon you, when death is near one of you, leaving wealth behind, to make a will in favor of parents and close relatives, impartially. This is incumbent upon the pious." (Qur'an 2:180)
"When death draws near one of you... it is time to make a bequest." (Qur'an 5:106)
